Trend Alert: Everyday Fur
Meet autumn in style by bundling up in outerwear and accessories in budget-friendly faux fur.
As temperatures drop, leaves fall, and the days get shorter, look to luxe, textured fabrics, deeper colours, and bulkier silhouettes to get you in an autumn mood. And if the Fall 2010 runways were anything to judge by, the most stylish way to do that this season will be fur. We’re not just talking coats here – who can forget Karl Lagerfeld’s Arctic princesses at Chanel, dressed head-to-toe in fur dresses, pants, and even boots? Or Zac Posen‘s models slinking down the runway in silky, 70′s-inspired separates…and furry shoes?

While you may not want to super-size your hips in a fur skirt, the furry outerwear and accessories options are a great way to add some energy to your existing fall basics. Don’t be afraid to get creative: unlike your grandmother’s evening fur, the pieces you’ll see cropping up in the stores are entirely casual and daytime-appropriate. Throw a fur stole over a vintage denim jacket for casual luxury, or pair a fur-trimmed handbag with a trenchcoat and flares for a 70s-babe look. We also love the idea of a big furry hat, for extra chilly days.
Real fur not in your budget – or too hard on your conscience? Thanks to new technologies in synthetics, faux fur is looking better than ever, providing great options for both the animal- and budget-conscious among us. Of course, don’t forget about vintage fur for extra eco points. Not only will you be re-using an old garment, but fur is biodegradable and thus won’t contribute to landfill disaster.
Our picks for budget-friendly faux options:
Faux Fur Stole, $53, Topshop
Ecote Faux Fur Flap Hobo Bag, $62, Urban Outfitters
Faux Fur Gilet, $110, Topshop
Naughty Monkey D Lux Faux Fur Boots, $85, Zappos
And finally, from the department of funny, but maybe not for actual fashionable consumption, we thought this faux fur “tail” was hilar:
CAMPISE Faux Fur Tail, $48, see more of it here.
Of course, if you are going to go the fur/evening route, don’t forget your diamonds! White fur + diamonds = Joan Collins = awesome.
