Alexandrite Jewellery

Alexandrite, one of June’s birthstones, was named after the Russian Tsar Alexander II, as it was discovered in Russia on the Tsar's birthday in April of 1834. While this gem was formed millions of years ago in a metamorphic environment, it is a newer discovery in comparison to the history of most birthstones, and is a rare stone in colour and appearance. While it's usually a blue, green, or even purplish stone, in some lighting it can be perceived as pink, yellow, and brownish. While the stone was originally found in Russia and much of the antique jewellery found in Russia today may contains alexandrite or bits of it, it has been also been discovered in India and Sri Lanka in recent years. In ""Vedic"" or Indian astrology, each stone is associated with a planet, and Mercury has been assigned to alexandrite. As Mercury is the planet associated with air and life, this birthstone is now recognized as a healing stone for both body and mind, and is specifically related to the heart, which is considered the centre of life.

Alexandrite is one of the hardest gemstones in the world. It’s also a fairly scarce gemstone, depending on the gradient of colour. The general rule of thumb remains: the more distinctive the colour change, the more valuable the stone is. However, despite the wide range of alexandrite gemstones one can acquire, every gradient is truly stunning by its own right. The wearer of this fine gemstone should know how special they are as a recipient of this rare and coveted stone. Whether alexandrite is your birthstone or a gem you chose based on its symbolic meaning, it belongs to the heart centre in regards to love, healing, and inspiration. Combined with its unbreakable characteristics, it's no wonder that this gemstone is often attributed to bringing a strong, everlasting bond between two lovers.
