Celtic Rings

Celtic rings are traditional and versatile pieces appropriate for men and women. A traditional Celtic ring is known as a Claddagh ring and has become extremely popular in the last several years as a symbol of being Irish and a fashionable jewellery item. A Claddagh ring depicts two hands holding a heart with a crown on top and can be used to represent or display the romantic or relationship status of the wearer.

The story of the Claddagh dates back centuries to the small Irish fishing village of Claddagh near Galway. A jeweler who was kidnapped by pirates was said to have designed the ring while remembering a girl he'd left behind. The heart represented his love, the crown symbolized his loyalty, and the hands represented their friendship. The jeweler presented the girl with the ring upon his return to the village and thus began the tradition of the Claddagh as a wedding ring.

Many now wear Celtic rings as a way of symbolizing their romantic availability. Before marriage, the ring is worn on the right hand to signify romantic availability. When the ring is worn with the heart pointing away from the centre of the hand, it signifies that the user is single. When the ring is reversed so that the heart points towards the centre of the hand, this means that the user is dating. Traditional Irish wear the Claddagh as a wedding ring on the left ring finger with the heart pointed towards the centre of the hand, which signifies marriage.

You may also want to find your own meaningful way to apply this beautiful tradition. Celtic rings make excellent gifts for both men and women, and can signify love, commitment, thoughtfulness, or whatever else you choose. Most recently, Celtic rings, including the Claddagh, have been featured in popular television shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie wore Claddagh rings that they purchased during a trip to Galway in 1963.

Make your wedding ring a Celtic ring or a traditional Claddagh and share in this wonderfully unique Irish tradition.
