Heart Necklaces
The necklace with a heart shaped pendant is one of the most popular pieces of jewellery to represent love, and is particularly common between companions as a symbol of affection, romantic love, and commitment. The symbol of the heart, which has become known across the world as the symbol that represents both romantic and family love and affection, is an ideograph on which the piece of jewellery is based. The ideograph of the heart shape has a rich history and an origin reaching back to as early as the 13th and 14th centuries.Developed in the Middle Ages and becoming most popular in the 16th century, the heart symbol can be seen in religious references, historic artwork, stained glass windows, and other historic texts. The first known usage of the heart symbol to represent romantic love is found in the mid-13th century manuscript, Roman de la poire, in which a lover is drawn handing his heart to his beloved. In this context, the heart symbol is still in its less developed stage, resembling a pinecone held upside down with the point facing upwards. This arrangement of the heart switched to what we know now as the heart symbol, with the point facing downwards, in the later part of the 14th century, and it's previous arrangement becomes rare in the first part of the 15th century. The modern version of the red heart with the point facing downwards and a scalloped top was noted as early as the 15th century, when it was used on playing cards.
Today, the heart shaped pendant, sometimes with a dramatically scalloped top, can be seen in romantic jewellery—particularly necklaces—around the world. Commonly designed with diamonds and a hallow centre, the heart pendant can also be found as a solid pendant with the use of gemstones, diamonds, or gold. The heart pendant is commonly paired with other geometric shapes, such as circles, ovals, and infinity symbols to represent love and affection that lasts a lifetime. A perfect gift for Valentine's Day, a birthday, or any day to represent the love between companions, friends, or family members, the heart shaped pendant necklace is a gift that will always evoke a feeling of love.
